The Radio 1 Essential Mix has in recent years become a platform from which artists are launched into the spotlight. From Duke Dumont to Julio Bashmore it seems as though nearly every DJ in the industry has tried their hand at championing some of the finest underground music around for two uninterrupted hours in the mix. Although late at night, the mix slot provides a key slot for artists to have a crack at the mainstream. Championed by superstar DJ Pete Tong the essential mix has bought dance music right to the forefront of a BBC’s Friday night programme. Radio executives realise the power and public demand for electro music right now, championing the tagline ‘In new music we trust’. It’s now common to see shows by Dubstep artists such Skream and Benga and with the electronic scene just set to expand , shows the ‘Dance Music Marathon’ are only set to be presented with a mainstream timeslot. The ‘Essential Mix’ also provides a great opportunity for listeners as well to hear a whole host of music they never would have. There have been many great mixes on the show over the years and below are in my opinion the five best !
Eats Everything :
Eats Everything is an electronic artist from Bristol. With the likes of Julio Bashmore bursting out of the city and possibly re- establishing it as the hottest new place for underground music interest in new DJ’s has reached fever pitch. When Eats Everything stormed into the limelight the city had even more to scream and shout about as this DJ had the potential to establish himself for the long term. Touted as one of the hottest new artists of 2013 his essential mix was only a sneak preview of his enormous talent.
George Fitzgerald:
After the release of his huge 2012 hit, Child George Fitzgerald was well and truly on his way to DJ superstardom. The London based producer has gone on to headline a huge number of shows in 2013 playing global stages to thousands of people. He was hand - picked by DJ Heidi , who plays a residency on radio one every Thursday night. Fitzgerald is dubbed as being a super producer with a great flow and this mix certainly does not disappoint.
Duke Dumont:
For anyone that has even the vaguest interest in dance music or even chart music for that matter the name Duke Dumont will be familiar. A DJ that rarely releases singles, shot to fame with the enormous track ‘The Giver’. Late 2012, he released ‘Need You (100%)’ which would go on to become his biggest selling track to date absolutely launching him into the public eye. Unfazed the DJ has just bought out his newest track 'Hold On' featuring MNEK. Another one sure to storm the charts his essential mix shows that he is definitely a class act.
Catz n Dogz :
If you haven’t heard of Catz n Dogz then you should really check them out as soon possible. The duo from Poland have been on the scene for more than 10 years and are underground electronics biggest stars. With various releases on DirtyBird records they are no strangers to producing a big club track. When they took to the Essential Mix they discussed how they wanted to go back to their roots and boy did they produce. An absolutely stunning mix featuring their own remixes together with some of the hottest underground music around makes for some superb listening.
Breach:
Ben Westbeech is one of the most talented producers in the electronic industry. Being a singer and a DJ is difficult especially because both are such difficult areas to master however Breach has gone from strength to strength with every mix, album and single he puts out. Most recently his effort ‘Jack’ has made it onto virtually every clubs playlist and is certainly making waves in the industry. Breach has recently confessed that he has moved back into music production and DJing which is his first love. It’s clear from this mix that Breach has well and truly announced his arrival and he’s here to stay.
