Called out last year as "one to watch" by 1xtra don Mistajam, Major Look have been successfully pushing the boundaries of bass music to the masses. Fronted by Stapleton, we caught a quick minute with the boys to find out what their doing during this summer's festival season.
They voice their views about the state of London's clubbing scene, weird and wonderful rider requests and Global Gathering and oven gloves?
What is your best festival memory?
Performing on the Global Main stage last year, of course.
What is your worst festival memory?
At a festival last summer (we won’t tell you which one), where the engineers kept sound checking the next act during our set.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen at a festival? Any other funny festival stories or anecdotes?
Seeing a crew of twenty girls waving oven gloves in the air while screaming for a rewind. Who brings an oven glove to a festival?
What is your festival survival tip?
Get rid of your mobile phone and just focus on getting into the vibe of the event rather than trying to film it. And, don’t overdo it on the first day. Although this is much easier said than done.
What do you always put on your rider? Anything weird?
16 dancers from selected South American countries (although not Brazilian), a pen for our livestock (mainly sheep) and three make-up artists for Stapleton as he changes his outfit at least three times during a performance. We also ask for a souvenir beanie and baseball cap from the local city. Only one of these is true.
What is your festival style tip / what do you wear on stage?
Keep it simple, mostly black.
Who is your favourite electronic music act at the moment?
We are loving the return of Daft Punk.
What are your tips for this summer’s big festival dance tracks?
Hopefully something off our forthcoming album, which comes out this summer.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing perform at GlobalGathering this year?
Plan B, Rudimental and Disclosure.
Can you provide a quote about having performed at GlobalGathering before, if applicable?
Last year we debuted at the festival, although we were pretty fresh-faced at the time, the crowd were incredibly receptive to us. Definitely one of the more educated and up-for-it festival crowds we’ve played to!
What does GlobalGathering mean to you?
A lot. It was where we made our first ever, main stage appearance at a festival. Something we are very honoured to mention.
What is the best electronic festival act you’ve ever seen?
Chase & Status, Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx
What do you think the biggest issue facing the dance music industry is today?
The closure of London clubs is a major issue and something close to our hearts. We love festivals, but cut our teeth in the London club scene.
What made you decide to get into dance music?
Listening to pirate radio back in the day. It was a naturally progression to pursue a career in dance music.
Who is your biggest inspiration in the dance industry?
Everyone out there doing their own thing. The hustle required to make it as a musician takes nerves of steel, so big up to each and every artist at every level of the game.
How do you see dance music evolving over the next few years?
Humans will invent robots who eventually make and perform to a higher standard than humans themselves. Oh wait, Kraftwerk already did that!
Who would you most like to perform with on the GlobalGathering line-up?
Probably Plan B, but there are a lot of amazing acts playing that we’d love to work with.
What will be the summer anthem of 2013?
Most likely Daft Punk’s new track with Pharell.
What really happens backstage/funniest backstage antics?
What goes on tour, stays on tour… we can’t tell you that!
Have you ever nearly missed a set? What was the closest shave?
When you are traveling across the globe playing shows, it always seems to be a mad dash wherever you go. We actually missed a show at Slammin Vinyl last year after our transport went all-wrong.
