Power Plant Explosion - 1 Dead, 5 Injuried, 3 Missing

Other | Tuesday 23rd February 2016 | Arash

A power station in Thames Valley, Oxfordshire, has exploded, leaving one dead, five in hospital and three missing after one of the buildings collapsed when a loud explosion went off on site.

A union official on behalf of the GMB stated that, “We understand workers were preparing two boilers for demolition in the coming weeks. This led to the collapse of a building.”

Didcot A which is a disused oil and gas plant is currently being set for demolition, and Didcot B, which is a natural gas plant, is still functioning.

The deputy leader of Oxfordshire Country Council said “I have been told there has been one fatality. At the Moment this is being treated as a collapsed building, not an explosion, but there was a bang.”

One of the workers in the building next to the Didcot station, David Cooke, said, “Out building shook and as we looked out of the window, the end of the main turbine fell in a huge pile of dust.”

The video below shows a large part of Didcot A collapsed, and although the power station is listed for demolition, no activity was scheduled for Tuesday.
