Die Antwoord play London

If you haven’t heard of Die Antwoord where have you been for the last 3 or so years? Get on it and check them out.
Die Antwoord, or the answer in Afrikaans, is a South-African rap-group whose style draws from the works of Roger Ballen, and the Zef counter-culture movement. The group is comprised of vocalists Ninja and Yolandi Visser, Dj Hi-Tek and Dj Vuligeboost.
One look at the pair and a listen to any of their songs, will make you say: ‘what the f**k is that?’. Despite that though, their lyrics are still incredibly infectious and the beats very catchy. Many people have asked whether or not this group is serious or not, but who knows and does it matter?
Their style incorporates elements of Zef culture which Yo-Landi has described as modern and trashy, the appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements: “It’s associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold. Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style.
Their lyrics are performed in Afrikaans and English and the live sets are meant to be electric, and intoxicating as they pump the crowd up with obscene lyrics. Just the sight of Ninja, covered in strange array of tattoos and Yolandi, with her unique look, immediately gets you excited to be seeing something so new and different.
To check out the full range of their incredibly strange and mesmerising videos full of alien dance moves check the jaw-dropping videos below as well as others on Youtube.
If you’ve always wanted to check them out live, or only just discovering this very unique band then check them out at Brixton Academy on June 22nd.
