Barca party players IR BCN are serving up a treat this June, as they welcome Ricardo Villalobos, Mathew Jonson, Sonja Moonear and Fumiya Tanaka to the Spanish capital for one of the finest OFF parties that week. Securing Villalobos’ only appearance for the week’s programme and nestled in the beautiful surroundings of Plaza Mayor in Poble Espanyol, this is definitely a cherry pick.
Little needs to be said about Villalobos, who aside from his notorious party antics, has consistently been idolised as one of the most exciting and unpredictable figures behind the decks. His devotion to what he does goes beyond just hosting a good party – in a recent interview with Crack magazine, he exclaimed how music “has a strong healing influence on society”.
Avoiding the press at all costs, he remains a key figure in the electronic music world by consistently seeking new modes of expression and refusing to stay within the lines.
Alongside Ricardo is another pioneer, Mathew Jonson. In a similar vein, Jonson is distinctly innovative – when you hear his music, you instantly recognise it. Experimenting on many grounds, he has produced a plethora of diverse productions ranging from those released on his own label itiswhatitis, to the jazz-inspired grooves found in the tracks of Cobblestone Jazz. His live sets are some of the best around and are a true extension of the work he puts in behind the scenes.
Swiss selector Sonja Moonear is next on the list. Having switched from classical music in her youth, Sonja has gone on to collaborate with some of house and techno’s most esteemed acts - Luciano and Zip – that has seen her propel to international recognition. Japan has long been a modest mouse in the techno world, however Fumiya Tanaka has made sure to make a name of himself. Bringing the sounds of minimal techno during the early ‘90s, he went on to form Japan’s first electronic dance label, Torema Records in 1993.
So there you have it, a stellar line-up of true talent to be found in the sunny districts of Barcelona. What more could you ask for?
Tickets are certain to sell out for this one, so make sure you cop one soon. See you at the plaza…
