Son of Kick Interview

Monday 10th June 2013 | Jenny

We caught up with Son of Kick ahead of the release of his much anticipated 'Shoot People' EP.

Guestlist Network:  If you could describe your musical style in three words, what would they be?

 Hybrid. Guts. Fire.

GLN: What inspired this EP? Was it an enjoyable creative process?

There’s a picture on my wall of the EP cover with the breasts that say “Shoot People” on them. The lyrics came from that. The beat is an old loop I made years ago that I revamped into something more current with my music direction. It's all very creative and upward thinking creating these tunes!

GLN: How important do you feel releasing ‘Shoot People’ on your own label (Way Way Records) is?

It is a big one for me. I usually control all the artistic side of my music; from artwork to videos to the choice of remixers. So releasing on my label feels really natural and exciting. My manager Matt Ryan helps me with all the business side of Way Way which gives me more room to get the creative side rolling.

GLN: The tone of the EP is quite dark and gritty – is that how you intended it to sound from the start?

No, not really. I make tunes. Then I decide which one goes with which and voila! I never write a tune wondering if its going to be dark or not. If I'm honest it’s a much more natural and basic process.

GLN:   Did you enjoy working with Grems and Marger? How did the collaborations come about?

Grems is one of my best mates, I have albums and EPs released with him already. It’s an ongoing musical love affair really! Marger I met through Nonames and Foreign Beggars. We really clicked from the start and now we are working really closely on new tunes and live shows.

GLN:  Do you prefer time in the studio or live performances?

I love both. I need both. I have a lot of energy to burn so playing live calms me down to go in the studio and be more focused. But I like long periods of touring and then the contrast of long periods in the studio.

GLN: What are your intentions for the next year?  How would you like to see Son of Kick develop?

The plan is to go out there and smash it. A lot of music is coming - loads of dope collaborations too. Son Of Kick Live will be ready after the summer and hopefully I'll be writing an album for 2014.
