DnB: Album of the Month - Future Perfect, Loadstar

Drum and Bass | Monday 10th June 2013 |

One of the first tracks to raise the duo formerly known as Xample and Lomax into Radio 1 territory was their remix of Chase and Status’s Blind Faith, so it seems fitting that Loadstar were later signed to RAM Records and have now released their debut album on the famous label.

After the commercial success of many of their remixes, Future Perfect doesn’t disappoint: despite largely being known for DnB there is enough diversity on this album to elevate Loadstar beyond the label of Fabric Room 2 on a Friday and into Nero territory.

It opens explosively with an aggressive hiphop track featuring upcoming UK grime star Scrufizzer, “Do You Feel Me” spitting bars at high speed over a big beat style bassline. “Warrior” featuring Jakes keeps the energy levels high, having become Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record In The World”.  “Scorpio”, “Don’t Wanna Be Alone” and Hadouken-featuring “BOA” are equally aggressive, macho pieces of DnB, whereas “Be There” and “Drowning” move into more classic jungle territory.

There is a hint of the intense, manic Skrillex/Knife Party style of electro with “Eat My Tears” and “Give It To Me”, and dubstep vibes in “Losing You” featuring Jenn D. However perhaps one of the standout moments of the album is the brief respite from the relentless high energy levels in “Black and White”, an understated yet effective dubstep track featuring rapper Benny Banks that was successfully released as a single back at the end of 2012.

With years of experience on the DnB scene behind them, this aptly titled album proves that Loadstar have the creativity to become a headline act this year.
