The future of Benicassim Festival

Tuesday 5th March 2013 | clara

After 17 years being one of the main International music festivals in Europe, Benicasim Festival finds its existence threatened.

2012 was a tragic year for the Spanish festival which saw an attendance drop of 20% mostly due to a compettiton between Spanish festivals and a poor lineup, which decided to go for a mixture of commercial artists, indie bands and music legends instead of relying on good strong artists like they usually do. The attendance drops lead to big names like Heineken to withdraw their sponsorship and finally in September of 2012, the owner of the event, Vince Power’s Music Festival Company, went into administration.

A week later the festival leader managed to regain control of his company assuring the existence of a 2013 edition. It seemed Vince Power had started to amend errors, when artists like Queens of the Stone Age, The Killers or Arctic Monkeys confirming their spots at 2013, but this didn’t last long, and the quality of the names started going downhill from here.

Two weeks ago, the Spanish company in charge of organizing the festival, Maraworld, went into administration with not a clear chance of being saved.  At the moment Vince Power and Maraworld have assured that the festival will take place from the 18 to the 21st of July and that there is nothing to fear, but the future of the festival is uncertain.
