Canal Mills - The New Venue In Leeds
Tuesday 9th October 2012 | Jake
19th Century textile mill gets a 21st Century makeover.
Some of these may ring a bell. The Cockpit, the O2 Academy, maybe Elland Road. Now it’s time to add a new one to the list. Canal Mills.
Very rarely do you find a venue willing to explore different kinds of art and culture, expand their venue through an historic 19th Century landmark and then put it out there for the world to see. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. The successful opening night in September saw 1200 partygoers descend on Canal Mills to watch artists such as Tensnake, Julio Bashmore and The 2 Bears.
The club is run by Sound Channel, a Leeds based event group who also manage Wax:On, Metropolis and Hideout Festival. It’s situated on the Leeds and Liverpool canal with the aim ‘to create a constantly evolving space for all mediums of creative output’. The venue is to hold film screenings, art exhibitions, theatrical projects and live gigs. To my knowledge there is no other venue in the country offering this much art in such a rare setting all at the same time.
On their books over the coming months you can expect to see Maya Jane Coles, Mono_Cult, Joy Orbison, Friction and Mr Scruff to name but a few. Canal Mills looks set to become the premier venue in Leeds, if not the north. I cannot see anyone rivalling this. With this much talent on show all at once, you won’t know where to look first.
This is a venue also available for hire. Whether you’re an established artist or up and coming, Canal Mills offers an insanely unique backdrop to showcase your art, whatever that may be.
