The Den and Centro from The End to its end

House | Monday 9th July 2012 | Osh

The notorious night spot The Den and Centro and reincarnation of famous London club The End in Holborn, has had its licence revoked by a magistrates court following the intervention of Camden Council.

The club which is famous for nights such as Popstarz, Pause and Paradox has been fighting tooth and nail for the club’s licence after a series of complaints made to Camden Council. There have been many people unhappy with the state of The Den and there have been reports of shootings, stabbings and drug dealing. The club which catered for a 1000 people on a nightly basis struggled the cope with the amount of drunk people leaving when the bars closed, residential areas are a matter of meters away.
The licence holders argued in court that the the problems with the club existed mainly under the previous owners and that shutting a club down because of the reputation it has under previous ownership is completely the wrong message to send out.

The Den reopened in the same venue as The End which closed down in 2009. Since its doors were opened, The Den and Centro hasn’t reached the status of importance as its predecessor did. However since it was launched, the club has become a massively popular destination for late night party goers. The club very quickly became the place where people went when nothing else was open in central London as its licensing agreements allowed it to stay open very late.

The club was located at 18 West Central Street and was shut down after being plagued by anti social behaviour, drug dealing and violence. The 25th of June saw the final stage of a long process that began in September 2011. Drug taking/ dealing, violence, robberies, continual disturbance to local residents from customers shouting, mini cabs operating at all hours, congestion, urination in public places, underage drinking and a member of staff having sex with a drunken 18 year old behind the bar are some of the rumoured reasons that have brought down this venue.

A spokesman for the venue said current licence-holder Old World had made extensive efforts to stamp out problems arising before it took over in April 2010. Clearly these efforts were not quite enough, R.I.P. The Den and Centro.
