Egyptians Make History.

Wednesday 23rd May 2012 | Osh

The people of Egypt will today make history as they wake up to vote in the first ever fully open election the country has held. Voters have been waiting in line this morning (23 May) for a very long time, some have been waiting 30 years for this moment.

This is the first time that there has been no clear front runner, the last election in the country saw Hosni Mubarak win with 87% of the vote but he was overthrown during the Arab Spring uprising. 50 million people across the country are eligible to vote over the next couple of days for one of the 13 candidates.

The people of Egypt are eager to see organisation, reform and the eradication of poverty under the new rule of the country. It’s not however clear, how much power if any the president will have when elected. Fears that this could cause friction between the military and the government are growing as the military currently in control are determined to remain in power behind the elected government.

Amid the various different fears and the growing concern over the new constitution it’s a time of excitement, change and happiness among the Egyptian people. Their dreams have been realised and they are excited by the prospect of change.
