Stanton Warriors Interview

We had to catch up with the Stanton Warriors after seeing their amazing set at Manchester’s Warehouse Project last month! These Break Beat beasts have been on the scene for a while now so we decided to find out how they got to where they are!
Your set was amazing at Manchester’s Warehouse Project last month. What did you think of Grandmaster Flash who also played that night, was he an inspiration for you growing up in terms of the type of Break Beat music you play now?
I think it was a great set. Grandmaster Flash is a legend and the fact that he can still rock out a crowd, especially playing old stuff and classics to a new-young crowd is a testament to itself. A lot of his stuff is timeless. He comes from an era where you can mash up all genres together, in a ‘block party style’ kind of way and that’s the ethos we, as Stanton Warriors try to keep ourselves.
What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
80's Electro, early Hip Hop, Acid House... all the building blocks of dance music really.
Your from the West Country, what do you think of the Trip-Hop scene there in places like Bristol? Are you a fan of that sound?
I grew up surrounded by groups like Massive Attack, Portishead etc, they are all a massive inspiration to us. Those guys always did their own thing and didn’t copy others, they originated their own sounds.
You've played a lot of major venues around the world, have you got some favourites?
Burning Man in the US stands out, Pacha in Ibiza, Avalon in LA, Souk in Singapore, London’s Fabric and Manchester’s Warehouse Project - they all stand out for us, great sound systems and great crowds!
What is one of the most memorable experiences you've had on tour?
The Shambhala festival in Canada was an amazing experience. It was outdoors and you could see the Northern Lights whilst we were playing and to add to that, there was a meteor shower too. It was the best light show a DJ could possibly ask for!
Out of all the music you've made, do you have a favourite track?
Probably our track Blue- its Break Beat but a lot of Deep House DJ’s picked up on it.
If you could form a Super Group, what artists (past or present) would you have in it?
Ludacris on the mic, Prince on guitar, Sade on backing vocals, Loleatta Holloway on vocals.
Do you have an all time favourite musician or DJ?
Greg Wilson to me is a DJ’s DJ.
Is there anyone on the Break Beat scene or music scene in general we should look out for in 2011?
Deekline and Dubstep in general.
What have Stanton Warriors got planned for 2011?
Got a new album coming out soon, big tour coming up in January - covering places like the Far East, America and Australia. The Stanton Sessions - DJ Mix is coming out soon too!
