Celebrate Abroad!
Monday 5th December 2011 | Osh
With Christmas dinner and drunken family argument digested, New Year’s Eve is the date to unleash your pent up party ambitions. It’s the last day of the year and that signifies one thing - out with the old and in with the new. Providing the world doesn’t end, 2012 is probably going to be pretty good so what better way to welcome it than shedding these shores and visiting a foreign party capital.
Take a trip to the southern hemisphere... Cape Town
If you like big parties then Cape Town will hit your celebration switch. Holding one of the world’s biggest firework displays accompanied by all kinds of music and dancing, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront shouldn’t go amiss. Immerse yourself in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown to join the throng of 50,000 party goers. Keep the party going at the Minstrel Carnival on New Year’s Day: you’ll see Cape Town come alive. Join the thousands of costumed, banjo-picking dancers parading through the streets. That said, this is only relevant if you manage to keep yourself tied down to the city. Most of the wise have headed to a nearby field for a heavy weekend at the city’s nearby techno, dance and bass music festival, Rezonance.
Cross the (smaller) pond... Amsterdam
Just a short distance from our isle, Amsterdam will be heaving this New Years. Bare the cold and take to the main square of Museumplein, for a free open party! Including a stunning firework display, DJ sets, and an array of food and beer stalls to taste, the event will be an electrifying one. For those who prefer a climate controlled atmosphere head to Amsterdam’s array of hotspots to continue the celebrations. Apenkooi, Pardiso, and Magna are all presenting a mix of techno, electro and hip hop to make this a supersized celebration.
An exotic celebration... Rio de Janeiro
See in the New Year on the sands of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. Here, people from all over the world flock to join the locals in marking the date of Fiesta de Lemanja - the offering of gifts and flowers to the Goddess of Water. Millions of candles are sent floating out to sea making it a psychedelically romantic affair. Afterwards you can immerse yourself in live Samba music and dowse yourself in champagne as the clock strikes midnight! After the fireworks, the beach front is surrounded by nightlife to continue on the celebrations into the early hours of the morning - but don’t expect to get entry at the door without a ticket, make sure it’s booked in advance.
