Yasmin Interview RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 28th November 2011 | Osh Yasmin We caught up with the lovely lady to have a chat about touring, working with Devlin amongst other electronic artists, and her new tunes. http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/62529699/Yasmin.jpg How did the Devlin collaboration come about in the song ‘Runaway’? The producer’s of the record are guys called Futurecut and I had done a lot of work with them on my own and they were in the studio with Devlin, I didn’t know Devlin was there and I was just in the area, I live nearby them so I just jumped up to say hi to the guys and Devlin was there and he’d written these verses on the track and there was no chorus on it. There were like “Do you wanna hear what we’ve done?” and played it to me and as soon as they played it I got an idea for the chorus, and I said “I don’t want to step on anybody's toes but I’ve got an idea for a chorus, do you wanna hear it?” they said “Yeah!” I recorded it and they loved it and it was the second single... What really inspires you to write? Everyday situations, being honest. I’m inspired by, sometimes it’s a lot easier to write sad songs or songs about struggle rather than “I’m so happy!”, so it’s kind of like life struggles, little hiccups, because to be honest a lot of times people listen to music to help them get through things or give them inspiration or to give them encouragement, so that’s what I try and do especially on my own, you know, largely about independence, about taking risks and going against the grain, if I can encourage more people to do that through a song, I’ve won. I imagine there is an album coming at some point? When will that be hitting the streets and what can we expect in terms of production and artistic collaborations? I’m looking forward to it coming out the beginning of 2012, this whole year I’ve been working on it and it’s been a really nice journey and a nice process and there was a lot of self discovery and a lot of growth and evolution throughout the year and throughout the music. In terms of producers Shy FX is on there obviously, we’ve done a couple more records together, The Freemason’s who remixed ‘Finish Line’ and when I heard the remixed I was like “I’ve gotta work with these guys!”, so we’ve worked together. I’ve worked with Diplo, who’s part of Major Lazer, Futurecut who did ‘Runaway’ and I’ve got other tracks with them. The only other artist collaboration is with Miss Dynamite, she’s on a version of ‘Light Up The World’ which you will hear very soon! ‘Light Up The World’ is produced by the legend Shy FX how did the song come about? I went in the studio with Shy and said “Look, give me a breakbeat and give me some reggae”, and that’s all I said! He came back with this track and he smashed it, that’s him all day, he’s knows exactly what he’s doing with breaks and when it comes to reggae and dub so and I just love the vibe of it, it sounds like an old sound system track and it’s just right up my street. I’ve always struggled to make songs that are uptempo and uplifting, I’ve always felt that it would be cheesy and this was the first record that I made that felt “This isn’t cheesy, this is cool, I love it, it is exciting, it’s bouncy, it’s everything”, it was just a good vibe, it shows a different side of me you know. I’m 22, I grew up as a DJ, I’ve been in clubs, I love to party, I love great music and dancing and that song represents me. My other two singles represent other sides of me.
