Interview with Bashy ( by Tunji Kukoyi) Films, tracks, albums Bashy is a busy busy man and because he knows what’s good for him, he found time in his busy schedule to speak to me while on tour with Tinchy Stryder. I caught up Ashley Thomas AKA Bashy to discuss movie, music, twitter and more.
I know you been busy with the up coming film and the sound track tells me a bit more about it?
What can people expect from the shank film?
Shank man...you can expect a lot of actions you know what I’m saying, its set in 2015, it’s about the commodity of drugs and everyone fighting over it, there are no proper police around and the kid have no proper help. In the film I played a leader of a gang and my morals are no killings, then something happens to me in the film and this is how my little brother goes on from there. You need to watch them film I can’t give too much away. Lol
There is a big hype around your new record 'when the sky falls' tells me a bit about the inspiration behind it?
Its the movie really, I had the privilege to see the movie before it’s been released, and I felt inspired by the movie so I wrote something that I thought match the tone and the whole movement.
Black Boys, kidulthood to adulthood, and now When Sky Falls, movie soundtrack is becoming your signature?
Oh yeah I think because I’m an actor and also a musician and they both comes hand in hand. So it’s easy for me to do them.
You continue to make music with positive lyrics and raising awareness about issues in and around youth culture in UK. Do you feel like this is your responsibility and you are like the youth ambassador?
Nah I feel like I just speak the truth and that’s what comes out, I feel good that I’m in a place and that I can inspire people to go on and do better things. As regards to the ambassador I think automatically you’re just perceived as a role model, it does not make you a role model, but if anyone wants to follow my lead and take positive aspect from what I do then go for it.
You are supporting Tinchy on tour at the moment; tell us a bit more about that?
That is going really well, I’m actually in Ireland right now about to check out of the hotel room, I did a show last night. Everyone is cool is not like that fake kind of love its real because I know where he’s come from, and we know each other from back in the days so it’s good to link up. He has crossed that boundary now and has the major support from the industry and he is bringing people like me along to see the world, get some of the action and gain new fans from different part of the country not forgetting where he came from...For me it’s all good.
What other artist in the UK are you into at the moment?
Errrh who do I like...I like Giggs I think he is alright and Wretch 32.
Have you ever been called a sell out? What is your opinion about people saying some artist being a sell out in the Grime scene? (E.g. chipmunk and others)
No I have not been called a sell out!
Chipmunk has crossed over and making good music so he’s not a sell out.
Mans sell out shows init lol.....if that’s what sell out is then I don’t know what to say. It’s all about selling out shows and selling out albums, and I sold lots of t shirts and they sold their stuff too, everyone is making positive moves and coming together.
How come you still independent and not signed to a major? Surely there are lots of A&R chasing to sign you?
Yeah and No I don’t think major labels are ready for what I’m doing at the moment, I’m just not too sure if they are ready they’ve holla and stuff but as regards to putting their money where their mouth is I don’t think they are ready, it’s not been done before because I’m a musician and actor plus my music is slightly less filled and I got a different flow to everyone else and I don’t talk about certain things. Yeah there’s a possibility but we are happy doing what we are doing plus I’m nominated for certain awards, still getting same shows as major artist, I’m supporting artist signed to majors so it’s cool.
What else have you got in store for 2010?
I’ve got another movie coming out later on this year called 4321 that comes out in May, I’m on the Gorillas album so we going on tour, yeah man I’ve just got more music, more fashion, more films so just look out.
What advice would you give to a female fan of yours that wanted to impress you?
Just be honest, be yourself, just be confident, “I like a girl that is confident”.
If you were to change something about law in UK what would it be?
There are so many that I would change...If I’m to start mentioning we are here all day.
Have you got any advice for youths that want to get into music or movie?
“Just be on it, be original if you’re going to do music, and always have a plan for what you wanna do!”
And if you are going to be an actor make sure you study the craft before you come into it don’t just think you can jump in front of the camera and start acting, try to learn your craft study it and you will be safe from there.
How many times a day do you twit and how many followers do you have?
I twit all day I don’t have a specific number just whenever I’m doing something and I get the time I just twit about what I am doing. I’ve got about 18,000 plus followers.
