TGN Take On Mountains In Ireland
Friday 26th August 2011 | Osh
If you’re looking for a cheap holiday that is not too much of a distance but far enough to escape from all the pressures of home, head to Donegal! The seaside towns in Ireland’s most north-westerly county have all the character of English coastal towns but with added Irish charm. The seaside village of Downings has a variety of pubs, including the quaint Singing Pub, and on most nights you can hear traditional Irish music. Flights to Derry on a low budget airline can be as low as £6 if you pick a day with no taxes and pack all your things in hand luggage. You do need car to get around though, but again if you look around you can get this pretty cheap too.
Donegal boasts a number of hills for scenic rambles and for the more adventurous there are even a few mountains to tackle! Some of us at TGN spent half a day climbing Muckish, Donegal’s second highest mountain - swiftly followed by a trip to Billy’s Pub, a local favourite on a Tuesday night where you won’t find a seat but plenty of character! If you are interested in exploring the culture and history of the county there are more than enough castles, ruins and day excursions to nearby islands.
If you simply want a beach holiday then there are a variety of watersports from kayaking to windsurfing to enjoy. Wetsuits and equipment can all be hired. But be warned: it can rain a lot! This shouldn’t stop you brave ones though, the locals are out in all weathers!!
