I joined September 11th concert at the iTunes Festival as a Guestlist’s insider. I had the pleasure of having an interview with Matthew Koma which was such an interesting chat about his career, his involvement with his huge music-hero Bruce Springsteen and his future projects: a record which will come out next year.
Hi Matthew! Let’s start talking about tonight. You have just headlined at the iTunes Festival along with Maroon 5. Were you excited to perform at Roundhouse?
It’s incredible! London has always been a place that has been very welcoming to me especially as a new artist, who is doing pocket steps, opening their arms early: it’s has always been a place that has done that. So, to be in the contest of this festival with the support of iTunes: it feels good. With the new record coming out, I’m in the place I’m in right now… it’s a combination of great feelings.
Your new latest record was The Cherrytree Sessions which was released one year ago. Give us an insight into it, how does it feel like to be part of ‘s sessions?
The Cherrytree sessions are a collection of acoustic versions of songs based on collaborations with others artists. For the most part it’s important to me that I am able to perform songs that are not in the context of dance music, that can stand and level on their own, performed just with an acoustic guitar. To release as part of Cherrytree series which is famously releasing, it’s a good platform and opportunity to let songs speak in that way. When Mark Beech asked me if I’d be interested in being part of that series, I was flattered and I wanted to contribute .
What is the next step in Matthew Koma’s career?
I just finished my record, that is going to come out next year. I’m excited for people to hear my new music, that is representative of me and what come from these past couple of years. There will be a couple of more collaborations, that I’m looking forward to. Kind of just be all over the map. A lot more of producing and writing for other artists, who have songs and records coming out next year. I just want to continue down this road! I also supported RAC with Cheap Sunglasses, I will be doing a lot of touring and I’m really excited about it. That is gonna be lot of fun. Wearing a different hat every day, it’s really nice.
Bruce Springsteen released "Rocky Ground," one of your remix. Did you feel honored and excited to be involved with Wrecking Ball’s album?
It’s unbelievable, I grow being a huge Bruce Springsteen’s fan, and I am still a huge fan at the moment too. To have an opportunity to work something artistically with somebody who taught you too much, there is no words for it. By far the most effective experience I have ever had. When you get the respect from one of yours “heroes”, there is no better satisfaction or gratification than that.
Our reader will likely ask: what is your favourite song or album? What would you recommend them to listen to?
Such an hard question! I am so involved with Springsteen, I grew up with him. He was incredible to me. I usually listen and steps into other classics. If I have to choose one: there is a singer called Doze and I consider him as the producer of two of the greatest records, and I’m obsessed with it. I think he is an incredible songwriter. Those are the one I would recommend, but there is so much, I could talk about it for hours.
