Seth Rogen and James Franco appear to be responsible for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s most recent threat of ‘merciless’ retaliation on the US.
The threat has come about because of the comedy duo’s most recent film “The Interview”, which is set to be released in October this year. The pair, who found fame together in Pineapple Express, play a producer and talk-show host who manage to land an interview with the infamous dictator. The pair are then contacted by the CIA and become embroiled in a plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un. The Korean leader is said to have taken the film as an ‘act of war’ and is threatening all out war if the US does not ban the release of the film.
Kim Jong Un has described the film as a ‘blatant act of terrorism’, so you would expect it to be serious and political. Upon watching the teaser trailer, however, it is obvious that this will be another one of Rogen and Franco’s stoner comedies. The trailer informs us, just minutes in, that the plan to assassinate the supreme leader hinges on the fact that he goes around telling people he can talk to dolphins and does not urinate or defecate.
It’s pretty clear that Rogen and Franco didn’t mean to create a global crisis with their new film but it seems inevitable that Kim Jong Un would get involved. This is a man who, in his fathers legacy, keeps the population of North Korea wholly unaware of the world outside of Korea. In April he asked the British government to punish a London hair salon for having a photo of him in their window with the caption ‘bad hair day?’ It’s pretty clear that this guy cannot take a joke.
Rogen, who Kim Jong Un has labelled a ‘gangster film maker’ does not seem to be taking the allegations against him too seriously. He tweeted saying ‘Apparently Kim Jong Un plans on watching #TheInterview. I hope he likes it!!’
It’s highly unlikely that the Interview will be stopped from being released so maybe the US should be ready just incase the supreme leader’s threats of war do come true. It is quite an amusing reason for war and when children learn about it in history lessons to come it would give them a laugh.
