The Dark Side of Chocolate
Tuesday 25th February 2014 | Bloddick
In The Ivory Coast, the world's largest producer of cocoa (more than 40%), children from 7 years old are tricked into working in plantations. Companies like Nestle, Barry Callebaut and Mars signed the Cocoa Protocol in 2001 promising to work for a total eradication of the problem. Clearly, such companies didn't really take commitment into the cause. What is really upsetting, infact, is the total indifference shown by the managers of the corporations. Along with the disarming behavior of the naive Ivorian authorities. A harbor of hope is only represented by the fervid attachement to the cause shown by some local activists, who deal every day with situations involving children deprived of their youth.
