Outlook Festival returns to Croatia this September after last year’s best ever event to date, a celebratory fusion of dub, reggae, hip-hop, drum and bass, garage, house and more on the dazzling Adriatic coast. Joining the dots between musical legends right through to the next generation of up and coming talent, again some of the finest live acts and DJs descend upon a 19th century fort for five days and nights of amazing music. Close to the historic city of Pula in Croatia’s northern region of Istria, the now iconic Outlook sets the agenda with a world-class array of performers in a collection of truly spectacular locations, set in and around an abandoned fort. Choose from a dungeon, a courtyard, a moat, a boat, the beach or the festival’s main stage set on a harbour. Outlook combines a heady mix of fun in the sun and under the stars as a dedication to sound culture, which has just revealed its first wave of names.
Indicative of continuing to raise their game even further each year, 2014’s first headliner at Outlook is Busta Rhymes: from a golden era of hip-hop, his performance will feature his work with Flipmode, A Tribe Called Quest, and the best of his tracks from his earlier albums discography including recent hit alongside Q-Tip, 'Thank You'.
Dancehall and reggae icons Barrington Levy and Horace Andy both perform live, with one of the world’s greatest hip-hop producers, Gangstar’s DJ Premier, also taking centre stage as well as one of the world’s most iconic reggae sound systems, Jah Shaka, with young Rasta revivalist Chronixx & Zinc Fence Redemption and Zouk Bass pioneers Buraka Som Sistema debuting at the festival.
Three drum and bass icons further demonstrate the scope of Outlook’s vision: Goldie - one of drum and bass’ enduring forces; DJ Marky brings his bouncing Brazilian drum and bass beats and RAM Records’ head honcho Andy C also features. The venerable statesman of his scene, David Rodigan, makes a very welcome return, as do Mala and Coki in their heavyweight dubstep Digital Mystikz guise. Joining Outlook are two garage legends; the MOBO-award winning MJ Cole, and garage legend DJ EZ. Genre-hopping Floating Points offers house, hip hop, dubstep, techno, jazz and occasional classical sounds, through to Paul Woolford’s new Special Request project, combining rave, house, grime and jungle.
Canadian beat-maker and remixer Kaytranada makes his debut having reworked many great artists with his unique touch, alongside Parisian beat-master Onra. Outlook features many further debutants: Jonwayne recently won Gilles Peterson’s Album Of The Year 2013, and the Los Angeles-based vocalist’s set at Outlook will be fascinating. Bishop Nehru is already one of hip-hop’s most exciting new prospects, and fellow game-changer STWO is another of the bright new talents debuting at Outlook. The respected High Focus hip-hop label bring their collective to Croatia, joining Eliphino’s eclectic hip hop, garage, house and dancehall. My Nu Leng also star; their stripped-down, deep-bass sounds are uncompromising as they are heavy.
With Croatia now regarded as one of the world’s best destinations for music and travel, Outlook has evolved into one of Europe’s best loved festivals, creating a truly unique experience in Fort Punta Christo. Set in a sublime setting, the festival attracts a global audience drawn not only to the dramatically mythical and peerlessly produced environment, but to the sound itself. The festival site is easily accessible from nearby the beautiful city of Pula, and a little further away Trieste. As well as the festival’s campsite, there are many hotels, apartments and rooms for private hire nearby. Outlook is famed for its chest rattling, ground-shaking rigs from Mungo’s Hi Fi’s scoop rig to Void’s Incubus system, Martin Audio’s Longbow and the legendary NCA Soundsystem, which are integral parts of the festival experience. Nearby there are pristine beaches and coves to discover, the beautiful Adriatic sea to cool off in as gloriously hot summertime weather basks over a fun-filled region steeped in history. There’s lots of adventure waiting to be found for those combining a holiday with their trip to Outlook.
