A Great Film You have Probably Never Seen: Stitches

Other | Tuesday 17th December 2013 | Matt

Quite often you find extremely well structured films with an indifferent concept that slips under the radar and on the whole is ignored by the general public, but is still (in my opinion) a great film.

I will kick things off with the wonderful little Irish/British horror comedy ‘Stitches’ starring comedian Ross Noble, I stumbled across. The film starts off by introducing us to a rather crude and unappealing party clown called Stitches (Ross Noble). He lives in a caravan, has promiscuous sex and is rude to the children and parents alike: not ideal qualities for a party clown. At one particularly bad party he was receiving an overwhelming amount of abuse from the kids. Through a series of mishaps brought on by the kids he ends up falling on a knife and dying.

Fast forward 10 years and the kids from the party are now a bunch of hormonal teenage students. This part of the film plays out a bit like Skins meets American Pie meets The Inbetweeners. After around half an hour of pretty entertaining gags and banter amongst the drunken teenagers at a party, things start to get really interesting.

Stitches the clown has come back from the dead to seek revenge on the people who he feels were responsible for his death and stopped him from being able to finish his show. The film contains the best blend of comedy and horror I have seen since ‘Shaun of the Dead’. I'm generally not a fan of Ross Noble as a comedian but he is barely recognizable in this film and pulls off the role perfectly with a mixture of dead pan humour and genuine menace.

The best part is definitely the killings, which are all executed in the manner of a comic gag followed by an extremely cheesy pun. I wont give too much away as this is definitely something you need to see for yourself, but some of the best kills include a ‘balloon animal’ style dog being made from a victim’s intestines and Stitches getting some “food for thought” by eating a victim’s brains like scoops of ice cream.

I would say that ultimately this falls more under the comedy genre than it does horror, but that being said there is still enough blood and guts to keep the avid gorehound happy. I would recommend this to fans of ‘Shaun of the dead’ or the more comedic slasher flicks like the later  ‘Jason’ movies. If you have a pre-existing phobia of clowns this may not be for you and if you don’t… you may do after this.
