Rise of the pizza bots!

Other | Friday 21st April 2017 | Shuaib

Many companies have been racing over the decade to create an autonomous vehicle that is safe, and able to deliver products in record breaking time. Now thanks to Starship technologies, we can achieve that dream!

Starship is a company developing self-driving robots, and they have been in the spotlight over the recent years for teaming up with food giants such as Just Eat and Pizza Hut, to improve the way we receive food.

Over the past few years, they have been running a number of tests all over the world. They started briefly in London with Just Eat, and then moved on to other cities in Germany and the Netherlands, delivering pizza within a one-mile radius.

Hermes, a parcel company have also been working alongside Starship to research on increasing the range of 'on demand' service. They have already begun testing the vehicles in Hamburg, and they have now moved on to London, where you can find the vehicles in Southwark.

The robots will focus on collecting parcels rather than delivering them, and with the advancements and dedication of these companies, it is inevitable that we will soon see more robots taking over most jobs that were usually done by humans.

Andy Miah, a professor at the University of Salford's 'School of Environment and Life Sciences', points out that, "at the moment, in big cities, it can be hard to walk down the street because of the number of people. In time it could be the robots we are trying to dodge. I'm not sure that would be a better world."

Starship responded to this by saying that the machine is only 22 inches tall and 28 inches wide, and only tavelling at 4 miles per hour, it is easy to control, so, for now, we can say that there will be no robot takeover, just yet.

However, with state of the art sensors and cameras, Starship has answered our prayers for an effective way to reduce carbon footprint, as well as reducing the number of motor accidents that we see on our roads every year.
