Rock icon Tom Petty dies at age 66

Indie | Monday 9th October 2017 | Patience

The legendary lead singer of The Heartbreakers died of cardiac arrest on the 2nd of October surrounded by friends, family and bandmates.

Known for hits like 'Free Fallin', You Don't How It Feels', 'Wildflowers' & 'I Won't Back Down' Petty's contribution to music has been described as the "embodiment of rock 'n' roll."

His timeless songs, openness to new sounds and heartfelt lyrics saw him dominate the Billboard's rock chart in the 1970s and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002. It was just in 2014 that Petty debuted at number one with Hypnotic Eye.

Recently completing a tour at the Hollywood Bowl for the band's 40th anniversary, Petty was proud of his musical legacy and the influence he has had on countless other musicians as well as his fans. Speaking to Esquire in 2006 he said: "As you're coming up, you're recognized song for song or album for album. What's changed these days is that the man who approaches me on the street is more or less thanking me for a body of work – the soundtrack to his life, as a lot of them say. And that's a wonderful feeling. It's all an artist can ask."
