UK Government Pledges To Help Refugee Children

Other | Thursday 28th January 2016 | Sam

In the coming months, the UK is to give shelter to unaccompanied child refugees, however, no exact figure has been given in regards to how many will be given refuge.

After facing increasing pressure from campaigning groups to prioritise children who have been separated from their families, the Home Office and the UN High Commissioner have stated that they will work together in order to identify ‘exceptional cases’ from camps in countries affected by the recent conflicts in countries such as Syria.

Having pledged to take in 20,000 refugees by 2020, some campaigners believe that the UK Government can do even more to help those whose homes have been devastated by war and poverty, one way being to allow 3000 vulnerable child refugees entry into the UK from Europe.

Furthermore, it is believed that any child refugee taken in by the UK will be in addition to the 20,000, not inclusive of it. However, some sources claim that the number of children involved in this pledge will not significantly increase the current commitment of 20,000 refugees.

The Government has also claimed that it is to pledge £10million to help the refugee minors currently residing in Europe.
