Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

Thursday 22nd November 2012 | Osh

Kendrick Lamar's album good kid, m.A.A.d city showcases Kendrick's versatility with eclectic undertones. Opening with a prayer and featuring a mashup of neo soul, hip-hop and rap, the album's tempo is consistent, from the chilled out vibes of Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe to Sing About Me.

The album has elements reminiscent of Q-Tip, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Dying of Thirst is a haunting tune carried on the back of a 'trick scotch' drum beat while I'm Real is an RnB/Soul/Hip-hop groove. Backseat Freestyle is a more aggressive production, laying the bass on thick and heavy.

The album is like a narrative for Kendrick' life, starting at a teen of 17 years "with nothing but pussy stuck on m y mental" driving to meet a young lady, Sherane (the track name is actually the name of the young girl). Kendrick's album is punctuated with voicemail messages from his mother, grand mother and father, providing golden nuggets of information which we can all recall having been said to us by our elder family members. Two standout voice messages; one left by his father at the end of Real: "Any nigga can kill a man. That don't make you a real nigga. Real is responsibility. Real is taking care of your motherfucking family", and another from his mother: "If I don't hear from you by tomorrow, I hope you come back and learn from your mistakes. Come back a man… Tell your story to these black and brown kids in Compton.. When you do make it, give back with your words  of encouragement. And that's the best way to give back to your city. And I love you, Kendrick".
