Mercury Music Prize

Thursday 1st November 2012 | Osh

The winner of the 2012 Mercury Music Prize will be announced tonight

The Mercury Music Prize has been around for twenty one years and is one of the most prestigious accolades in the British music industry. The Mercury was established in 1992 as an alternative to the Brit Awards, showcasing alternative music rather than the largely mainstream, commercially successful acts recognised by the Brits.

PJ Harvey won the award last year, and is the only artist to have received the award more than once (she also won in 2001). Harvey is also the only female solo artist to have walked away with the award to date.

Speculation is high over who will walk away with the award this evening. Richard Hawley is said to be the favourite, but he was previously nominated in 2006 and was beaten to the punch by the Arctic Monkeys. When frontman Alex Turner accepted the prize he famously said: "Someone call 999 - Richard Hawley's been robbed." Perhaps this will be Hawley’s year, or perhaps he will be beaten to the punch once again by a younger, quirkier artist.

The winner will be announced tonight on Channel 4 @ 10pm

Here’s this year’s shortlist:

Alt-J – An Awesome Wave

Michael Kiwanuka – Home Again
