Introducing Buddy, the next to blow up on the hip hop scene

RnB/Hip Hop | Tuesday 27th March 2018 | Jake

Hailing from Compton, Buddy will be well known for working with Kendrick Lamar on the 2012 track ‘Staircases’ which appeared on the 2014 tape Idle Time. However, it is his relationship with Pharrell that has had the biggest impact on his career.

Buddy was introduced to Pharrell by music supervisor Scott Vener, who put together the soundtracks to Entourage and 90210 among others. Pharrell was instantly drawn to Buddy’s talents and signed him up to his record label i Am Other and they have since collaborated on tracks with Pharrell on production.

As well as being on i Am Other, Buddy is signed to Columbia Records and has put out three tapes under the labels. The two years after dropping Idle Time in 2014 were spent on features, including multiple songs with Nipsey Hussle. They were quiet years and although his debut mixtape had gotten critical success it hadn’t made him a household name in rap.

Last year Buddy looked to change that: two EPs, Ocean & Montana and Magnolia were dropped and achieved success among critics and fans alike, with the EPs each being streamed millions of times. He’s looking to keep it up this year, dropping the hit ‘Black’ featuring A$AP Ferg, the song emphasises Buddy’s role as a conscious rapper and one who is ready to shake up the mainstream.
