Altar, an absolute 'Gift' of an album!

House | Monday 10th April 2017 | Ben

Indie-electronic group The Gift have released their new LP Altar. The quartet is known for their abstract ideas and blissfully complex melodies, and have now teamed up with music pioneer Brian Eno with this new record.

The album has already made waves with the single ‘Clinic Hope’ being play listed on radio 6.

As I listen through the record one thing is clear this record is built on incricate layering, sprinkled with dream-pop style hooks. A great example of this is the track ‘Big Fish’ with a sexy baseline to kick off the song, the groove and explosive vocals hit you like a train. It’s like Metronomy and Hot Chip had a baby.

All the tracks on this record are different and they are all complex and abstract in their themes and elements, a perfect example of this complexity is the dark brooding track ‘Malifest’.

Despite the complex themes throughout the album, it manages to pull it off without sounding pretentious, and the heavy funk influence on the tracks manages to carry it home.

The Brian Eno influence is also clear and as he co-wrote and produced the album it’s obvious why the complexity and layering is so well done.

Ultimately it’s a fantastically high tempo electronic pop record, it’s album of the year material, and yes I know it’s only April.

The Gift's new album Altar is out now!
