Shanty Giving You Those Good Riddims

Reggae | Friday 10th March 2017 | Patience

Known for catchy reggae bass lines and feel good tunes, with a modern twist on classic roots reggae, Shanty will give you all the right vibes.Their latest single Happy to be Sad is a snippet of what's to come on their upcoming EP Strange Little Human. The song is filled with upbeat reggae rhythms, emotional vocals and sincere lyrics.

So we can only imagine that their EP is going to be filled with flawless tempos, energetic rhythms and moving lyrics.

So give us a bit of background - was it always the plan to work together?

Most of us used to kick it at Uni, towards the end of our time there we started writing together, from this came Shanty.

Describe yourselves in 3 words?

Hungry, Lazy, Decrepped

What can we expect from your new EP Strange Little Human?

This EP is slightly darker than the last. Musically it's still roots influenced with some different flavours thrown into the mix.

Was there a story behind the name Strange Little Human?

I guess it’s about discovering a strange side of yourself.

Tell me about your latest single Happy to be Sad?

This track we wrote in Mindy’s (Shanty's keyboard player) old living room, we ran out of places to jam and couldn’t afford to hire a studio so we set up in a living room when his house mates were away, and wrote 3 or 4 tracks that we are proud of.

Lyrically I guess it's about a strange sense of release in sadness.

So if you could pick anybody in the world to work with on a track, who would it be?

Right now it would have to be Anderson Paak, that guys on fire. We’ve been rinsing his new album in the van.

Who are the influences in your music?

All things great and terrible.

Has living in London influenced your take on music at all?

For sure, my favourite thing about London is its variety, I think we have that knocking around.

What message are you trying to spread through your music?

We’re not consciously trying to spread any messages, we just write it how it comes out. Sure if we do have any positive messages that come out of music in the meantime, then great.

You’ve recently been on tour, how was that?

We are half way through but so far it’s been a special one. We’ve been working hard over the past few years touring up and down the country. Definitely noticed more people coming out than ever before.

Of course, opening up for the Wailers has been epic too!

What has been your favourite place to tour so far?

Hmmm, thats a tough one. Croatia was a beautiful place to play in the summer.

Who are you listening to right now?

Hiyatus Kayote, Anderson Paak, Skepta

Do you have a life motto, what is it?

Take it Ez.

What would you do to make the world a better place?

Assassinate Donald Trump, would be a good start.

What would you fill a swimming pool with, if it could be anything?

Liquor and weed!

Strange Little Human comes out on the 24th March, so be sure to check out Shanty live at Brixton Jamm on March 23rd. Tickets are available now!
