We caught up with the legend, Adam F

Drum and Bass | Tuesday 6th September 2016 | Arren

Adam F is a staple name in drum & bass. He was behind a MOBO award winning album, headed the influential label Breakbeat Kaos with DJ Fresh and has remained a consistent force pushing UK bass music. This year he's hitting it hard, kick starting a new project with Jaguar Skills. He's also dropping a new single with Kokiri, packing classic elements of drum & bass into a jacking house beat.

We felt it was only right to catch with this legend of UK music.

We saw you've got a new track, 'Harmony' coming on Danny Howard's Nothing Else Matters with Kokiri and RAE; when you discover those two?
I started hearing Kev's (Kokiri) music from being sent some of his early tracks, that were signed to labels like Ministry of Sound, for me to try writing some toplines.
Around the same time he was getting a lot of specialist radio support, so I reached out on Twitter to suggest getting in the studio together and see if we can cook anything up that we like.
I've always been a fan of Rae through lots of great songs I have heard, either as a vocalist or songwriter. When we had a rough instrumental we reached out to her to see if she was feeling the track and then set up a session together, Rae smashed it!
It's exciting to be part of the start of Nothing Else Matters, Danny has always supported all of our scenes & genres. That history gave all of us the confidence to jump on board.

You've had some huge remixes commissioned for that! MJ Cole, The Prototypes, Kokiri & George Kwali - covering all bases right! Were you behind commissioning the tracks?
I always take time to decide on who to reach out to when commissioning remixes, not only for my own music but also as A&R running the label Breakbeat Kaos with DJ Fresh.
I've always been a fan The Prototypes and their production, they put as much passion into a remix as they do when making their own tracks - for me that's important. They always deliver a killer!!!
MJ remixed my last single with DJ Fresh 'Believer' so it was a honour to have him back on-board for 'Harmony'.
I managed to get in the studio with Kokiri last year and love his work. Kokiri and George have released their own massive singles and worked on some of hottest remixes over the summer and it was great to have them on-board to.

Away from the studio, how has your summer been?
In August I played the GET HYPE BOAT PARTY with The Prototypes on the Thames. Also I was at SW4 for the first performance of my new project with Jag Skills called 'The Dirty Horses'.

When did you first start working with Jaguar Skills and what is it you like about him?
At the beginning of the year. He's got skillz... He's a world class DJ and having spent time in the studio I've learned how much he has actually achieved over the years.

You performed at Glasto back to back with Roni Size AND Bryan Gee - guessing you three took the ravers back to some drum & bass classics?
First time I've played back to back with Roni. I was looking forward to this!! Between the three of us we switched it up with some new VIPs and some classics. I remember Roni playing a rework of 'Music Box' and I made a 'Circles' VIP just for Glasto. GOOD TIMES!!!

Did you catch any good sets while you were there?
So many good sets this year... Andy C's set was massive!

You have a lot happening right now, though you've been in the scene for years now! For those who don't know you're history - where should they go back to?
I guess a track which was one of my first singles to get me on the map was 'Circles'. It's always one of the tracks that new d&b producers tell me got them in to drum & bass. It's always good to hear when your music has had an impact or influence on someone.

You mentioned earlier your label with Fresh, Breakbeat Kaos. You both signed Pendulum's first album to it, what went through your head when you first heard Hold Your Colour?
Oh my fucking God!!! It was the same reaction when I heard their music as Knife Party - Rob is one of the best producers in the world.

What's your proudest moment?
Winning A MOBO award for best album.

What is the worst job you have ever done?
Not had a worst... but worked in Hamley's toy shop as a magician when I was 16

Who is the funniest person you know?
Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen)

If you had to start a new life in a new country, where would you go?
Peurto Rico.

What is your life motto?
If you cant find a purpose, figure out your passion. I've learned your passion will lead you into your purpose.
