Other | Tuesday 12th September 2023 | Francesco

The BFI London Film Festival is back with a rich lineup: a total of 225 films. It will take place over 12 days, on October 4-15, 2023. The festival will open with Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, and will close with The Kitchen, directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya.

Highlights of the festival’s 2023 slate range from new films by Martin Scorsese with Killers of the Flower Moon, Sofia Coppola's Priscilla to the highly anticipated Golden Lion Winner, Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos, and the long awaited last movie by Hayao Miyazaki – The Boy and the Heron.

Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma who are murdered under mysterious circumastances in the 1920s sparking a major BOI investigation. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone are the main stars of this Western crime drama.

Directed by Emerald Fennell, Saltburn is set in the mid-2000s and it follows a young college student (played by Barry Keoghan) who becomes infatuated with his aristocratic schoolmate (Jacob Elordi).

Coppola's Priscilla is a new American biographical drama film telling the story of Priscilla Presley and her life with Elvis. Receiving huge critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi impeccably play Priscilla and Elvis.

Receiving the most award-buzz after winning the Venice Film Festival, Lanthimos' Poor Things explores the life of Bella played by Emma Stone. She is a young woman who is brought back to life by her guardian, the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Initially naïve, Bella is eager to learn about the world around her, albeit under Baxter's protection. Wanting to see more, she runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, and travels across continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella demands equality and liberation.

Miyazaki directs his last movie, The Boy and the Heron. Mahito is a young 12-year-old boy who struggles to settle in a new town after his mother's death. However, when a talking heron informs Mahito that his mother is still alive, he enters an abandoned tower in search of her, which takes him to another world.
