Girl Power Goes Global!

Wednesday 8th March 2017 | Grace

As the 8th of March marks international women’s day, it is important for women across the world to come together in solidarity to unite for the equality and the respect we deserve. Starting in the early 1900’s, this day is about so much more than pay and derogative comments.

In the UK, rights for women are far from perfect and a big change is needed to make a fairer society. However, at least in this country when bad things happen, people normally listen. And rightly so! But what about if you come from a country where many women don’t have a voice? A country like Canada!

Wait, Canada? Okay, so of course many Canadians gathered to make a stand for women on March the 8th. But why is it in a place that has the lyrics ‘home and native land’ in their national anthem, people don’t really care about the actual native people that live there?

Between 1980 and 2012 it’s thought that over 1,200 indigenous women have been murdered or have disappeared and what makes this even worse is that not only is this still happening, but the the police and government are doing nothing about this!

Not only have native people gone through the barbaric colonisation that Europeans forced them into hundreds of years ago, but still in the 21st century, women are going through the same sexual, verbal and physical assault. And the white middle class men in control of the country clearly haven’t given a shit in 400 years!

Therefore, as this month is international women’s day, let’s keep fighting for equality and rights but also, lets speak up for the women who don’t have a voice to end discrimination towards all women, no matter who we are or where we are from!
