De La Soul and DJ Premier at Somerset House

RnB/Hip Hop | Friday 22nd June 2018 | Jake

De La Soul came to represent something more than music when they catapulted themselves into Hip Hop’s canon of classic albums with 1989’s 3 Feet High and Rising. They represented a movement and birthed the daisy age, introducing some hippie elements to a genre that had veered strongly towards themes of violent bravado, depressing realism and gangster iconography.

Together with other members of the Native Tongues Posse they were credited with reintroducing a conscious element to the genre, as well as pioneering liberal causes in a strictly macho playing field. De La are revered as one of the greatest, influential Hip Hop groups of all time, with classics such as De La Soul is Dead (regarded by some as their best work), Stakes is High and AOI: Bionix further enshrining their legacy in the Hip Hop pantheon.

As part of Somerset House’s summer series the trio will play a one-off gig, with the legendary producer DJ Premier supporting them. Premier or Primo initially achieved success as one half of Gang Starr alongside rapper Guru in the late 80s through to the early 00s. It is this body of work, alongside production work on some of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever that has cemented his place as one of the genre’s most gifted producers and DJ's.

This won’t be a gig to miss. For tickets visit here.
