"Low ceilings, good soundsystem, off the beaten track" - Catch give us the lowdown on their weekend smasher

House | Tuesday 21st September 2021 | Arren

Ahead of their first event since Covid restrictions have eased, we talk with the brains behind label and event planners, Catch.

It’s been many months since Catch have hosted one of their parties. They hype up the weird and wonderful underground sounds of electronic music and through both their events and releases champion a wide array of styles.

This weekend they’re coming back, and coming back hard. They sorted a stellar night of music alongside DJ Zerya’s new night Läcker. Both crews will be bringing their eclectic party vibes to Dalston Den with Catch regular Ste Roberts, Nadsat, DJ Zerya and Ant Social. You can bag yourself some last remaining tickets here.

Ahead of the event this Saturday, we had a quick chat with the guys from Catch who given us 5 stellar tracks and given us the low down on their upcoming party and beyond…

What got you motivated right now?
I think the fact the we’re still going forward with events is a big motivator. It wasn’t long ago that every time you tried to announce something it got immediately closed down, and now we’ve had a good amount of freedom, people are really wanting to go out and let loose.

You’ve got your first event back since the pandemic, must have been many hoops to jump through?
Yeah, we quickly understood that until there’s a green light, there’s just no point in going ahead with anything. As we have events up and down the country, it became a bit of a logistical nightmare to try to work around restrictions, so now that we’re able to go ahead it's been a massive relief.

Ultimate Opening Track Eschaton - Malin Geine

What are you most looking forward to on your return to the dancefloor?
Just to feel the energy of the crowd on a dancefloor whilst playing. Lockdown was bittersweet from a personal perspective, it gave me the time to focus more on my music production which was amazing, but 18 months is a long time and I can’t wait to be behind the booth again.

You must have some tracks that you can’t wait to hear on the dancefloor?
Oh yeah, of course. Music became an even bigger part of my life through all this. I think my yearly outgoings are about 20% records at the moment. So, it’s ging to be nice to hear some of these on a proper system. Vladw – Jiangqing been one of them.

Track To Fill A Dance Floor So You Kno - Overmono

Not only is it your first party back since pandemic, you’re also moving to a new venue, Dalston Den. What did you like about this venue, do you see your party fitting in well in this space?
Yeah, the space is great. Everything you need for an intimate event. Low ceilings, good soundsystem, off the beaten track. It's weird and quirky and we can make it our own.

Joining you for the event are Läcker, why did you decided to work alongside these guys, what do you like about them and their style?
So, Läcker is a new night from London based DJ Zerya. She brings a real nice summer vibe to the mix and we thought it would be a great way to end the summer. Our date pretty much falls on the cross over from summer to Autumn, so I think it will reflect well in the styles of music merging together from more House and Disco, into Techno, Electro, Acid etc.

Track To Ramp The Energy Levels Apricity - LKY

Talk us through your line up?
On the night, we have Catch mainstay Ste Roberts, Zerya and Ant Social, and me. Myself and Ste always work well together. Anytime we have been on a line up together we have pretty much just decided to go back-to-back, and it’s always worked. He’s an outstanding DJ, with an incredible record collection and things just always seem to flow with ease when we play together. Zerya has been steadily gaining a great following through the UK this last year, she’s been touring with Pub In The Park, warming up for Basement Jaxx and Faithless, so I’m really excited to see what direction she goes in. Ant Social is an emerging artist local to London, he has a nice eclectic style skin to Gerd Janson so will be good vibes from the off.

Hosting your own events, you must enjoy partying - who in your mind are the best DJs on the circuit right now?
Ahh, this is too hard to answer. There’s so many good DJ’s now, and all in different with their own style and flow, so you can’t really compare. I’m really liking Marrøn at the moment for techno, his transitions are flawless and the rhythm he creates is unreal. Etapp Kyle is also a firm favourite of mine.

Ultimate Closing Track Elysian Fields - PJ

What do your parties bring that’s unique?
We’re trying to create events where people can experience something unexpected with music. We’re about showcasing local and new talent and great residents. The UK is full of incredible artists, and a lot of the time they don’t get the chance to shine, so we want to help with that.

After your party in September have you got anything in the diary?
After this event I have The Dirty Disco at Mint Warehouse in Leeds, on 16th October, which I can’t wait for. DD is where I spent my youth so it’s always great to play for the guys there and the new Mint Warehouse refurb is incredible. Then we have another event of ours on 30th October at Distrikt with Youandewan, NWO and Myself which im really looking forward to also. We have plenty more dates in the diary, but not releasing those just for now. Musically, my next release will be out on Catch Recordings at the end of the year. It’s a one tracker with remixes from NWO and Ste Roberts.

Track For A Spiff In The Garden After Ageispolis - Aphex Twin

What’s your ethos?
Leave your ego at the door.
