Steve Darko drops his debut album, and it's a smasher

If there’s a new album you hear this week, make it Steve Darko’s debut 'Midnight Swim'.

Steve Darko, one of the US’ fresher faces makes his latest step up releasing his debut album on the esteemed Dirtybird. Entitled 'Midnight Swim', it sees the Boston-based producer explore his chunky bass-driven sound through an eclectic series of originals and collaborations.

The album itself was largely written during lockdown, as a way for Darko to find his own freedom. Weaving across various styles, with an air of mysticality displaying itself across many of the tracks. There’s a balance of light and dark struggling between the tracks, if you’re into that philosophical shit - and if you’re not, it’s fourteen banging tracks of expert bass-play, melodic synth lines and vocal magic. From up front floor fillers such as 'Red' and 'Hypnotized', trippy wonks in 'Only Thing' and the "not even going to attempt to classify a genre" types like 'Love 100' or 'Eucildean Dreams' - it’s a serious album project with many exciting twists and turns.

It’s a great mix of solid originals and beefy collaborations. A healthy combination displaying not only Darko’s undeniable skills as a producer, but how adaptable his sound can be. Part of the wealth of great producers and vocalists included are; Dirtybird boss Claude Von Stroke, Nala and Phlemboyant. Together they help complete the album, a shining jewel in Darko’s discography and a great addition to the ever growing Dirtybird catalogue of music.
