Whigfield is back, baby!

Sunday 21st June 2020 | Grace

Most of us will have a strong memory of at some point in our lives strutting our stuff on the dancefloor as Saturday Night bleared out over the speakers. There was nothing better than letting ourselves be free as in unison we twirled our wrists, rolled our arms and jumped four times to turn 90 degrees. Well, Sannie Carlson, the dance music sensation who fronted Whigfield, the band who created the song in question, is back to fill our brains with more great dance tunes. We got the chance to catch up with her and talk to the music genius about her career, what’s to come and her new track Suga.

You are Danish, but you have spent a lot of time in Italy and other places around the world. How do these places influence your sound?

Whenever I travel, I always listen to local radios. It’s really interesting hearing different kinds of music and sounds. I always get inspired by new artists.

Who have your biggest musical influences been?

I grew up in a household filled with musicians and the radio was playing day and night. From ABBA and Boney M to Tom jones, music was playing nonstop at my house. I think those melodies have followed me throughout my entire life. I think that’s why I love to write melodies more than words.

You have also written, composed and produced. Which one do you like doing best and why?

Usually when I’ve written something different to my usual sound, I use different names. When I released my house music project, I went with my birth name Sannie. And singing with other projects such as dj’s like Benny Benassi, I’ve used Naan. Just to keep my work separate.

Where are the best places around the world to party?

I’d say the Australians are pretty good at partying. Anywhere there’s 90’s music there’s always a fantastic atmosphere.

What are some of the craziest things that have happened to you during your career?

In the mid 90’s I was invited to perform at the Bollywood awards in Mumbai. I did a duet of Saturday Night with a Hindi singer. After, when I was told that approximately 1 billion people were watching, my knees became weak!

With hind site, is there anything you would do differently in your life?

I’m already doing everything I love. Would love to get back on tour after the Covid19 has disappeared.

Tell us about your new track Suga?

Girl Power

The new track is so different to everything else you have made. Why did you decide to give it a more house/ dance feel?

I would call it a fresh sound and cool sound born on a day of kidding around in the studio. Think we did it in 1 day or so. For the remixes we chose some of the UK’s newest and talented DJ/producers such as WH0, Freejak, Billy da Kid, and Bad Neighbourhood. We’ve got some new remixes on the way soon.

As a female artist in the dance scene, do you feel like have had to push through sexism to get where you are today?

I think that as woman you’re not allowed to age. Nobody ever asks the age of a male artist. That’s a bit annoying.

Why do you think your career has been so successful?

I think it’s definitely down to a fantastic fanbase and good pop song I hope.

What do you say to those first starting out?

Just keep going. If you love what you do, you’re gonna have fun even if you don’t succeed.

You got into the world record book for Saturday night. Have you ever been tempted to try and break a different record from the book?

Haha! I wouldn’t mind getting back into that book. Maybe eating the most chocolate on a Saturday Night.

Taking a look at everything that is going on with the world, what can you do as an artist with a platform to change the way we see the world?

Ever since I’ve been doing my Facebook live performances from home, I’m talking a lot about mental health. It’s unfortunately still such a taboo, and a lot of people still find it hard to reach out to someone for help. I myself went through being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and it took a long time before I found the right help and medication.

What does the future hold for you?

I would love for Suga to crossover and when the pandemic is finally behind us it would be a dream to break America.
