Following the success of her previous single, All the Boys, Franky is back with her freshly released Follow My Lead, an upbeat pop song about going out there and living your dreams, no matter what the consequences may be. The Yorkshire based DJ has been compared to the likes of Charlie XCX and takes influence from both old and new. Franky tells us all about her new track and why the 80s was so great for music.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm a female singer, songwriter and DJ from West Yorkshire and full-time chocoholic! I DJ disco influenced house around Leeds and my own music is disco influenced production with a chanty styled pop hook!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Currently my alarm for the gym haha! I've been getting up at 6am recently like a crazy person to make sure I get chance to go to a class before starting my day and it has genuinely been helping me have so much more energy surprisingly
Who have your biggest influences been in your career?
I love all the 80's. My mum was a new romantic in the 80's and my dad loved 80's synth, so it may have something to do with listening to that growing up. I also love the 90's! It's SOO hard to pin-point specific artists as I take influences from so many.
How did growing up in Yorkshire shape who you are?
I'm from a very big family and one that's had to work super hard to make something from nothing, so that definitely taught me my work ethic. People around me also aren't afraid to speak their mind, so I think that's helped me to make sure I voice my opinion in the industry, and in life so I follow my gut in most situations. That being said, I don't like to take myself too seriously, life's too short!
What’s the biggest thing happening in the pop industry right now?
I feel like the sound is progressing by going backwards. Artists replicating the sounds they love in a way it takes you back but feels so new and I love it!!
Tell us about your single ‘Follow My Lead’, why did you write the song?
Whilst working towards music I've done every job thinkable and along the way have come across so many people, who either want to get away from the job they are in but never dared take the chance or always had some reason why they didn't do something else. Then there's been other people like me with big dreams trying to make them happen even if they seemed "unrealistic", whilst working in a job they don't particularly like in the meantime to be able to fund themselves! So [the line] 'this one’s for us' was a shout out to those people grinding and working so hard, bending the rules to do something different and not be afraid of taking a risk even though it's a struggle if that risk pays off it will be glorious!! I also hoped the song might inspire some people to get out there and go for what they want if they've been scared to before. The best quote I ever heard was 'you have your whole life to do a job you hate so you might as well take a chance on doing something you love' and I just believe that so much!
Who would your dream collaboration be with and why?
PURPLE DISCO MACHINE 100%, don't get me wrong there are lots more but he is just killing it right now and everything he brings out is so up my street! I think we'd create something amazing together!
If you were prime minister, what laws would you make?
I was sat thinking about this question for a good 30 minutes so that tells me we should probably hope this never ever happens haha
What are your hopes for the future?
My dream is to headline Glastonbury one day, so I'm just gonna keep on pushing until I make that dream a reality! And hope it's an unreal ride along the way!
