Ralph Lawson is leaving his 28 year residency at Back To Basics.
Following an impressive 28 year stint, Ralph Lawson has announced he’s leaving his residency at the iconic Back To Basics in Leeds. Since 1991 Lawson estimates 700 appearances at the club, where he’s played alongside countless legends in the dance music community including Daft Punk, Dust Brothers (pre-Chemical Brothers), Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, Derrick May and so many more. He announced the news on January 16th on social media with an in-depth post on his personal blog.
In a post on his own blog Lawson writes “As I watched Carl Cox tear the roof off the last Back To Basics at Church - I realised I had come full circle. That circle of the line has taken a mighty long time to get round, and been one hell of a ride, but in that instance I knew that I didn’t have either the time or the energy to take another trip around.”
In the same post Lawson also thanks the club’s promoter, Dave Beer and questions, “Will there ever promoters like him again?” He credits Dave for his loyalty and perseverance which kept him and other residency at the gig for such a long time and explains; “Dave Beer doesn’t intend to stop Back To Basics - and nor should he. There are already plans taking shale for the club going forward and there are plenty of great resident DJs in the team.” You can read the whole blog post where Lawson goes into great detail about the event, its history and his reasons for departure on his blog.
Ralph Lawson has been an instrumental figure at the Leeds institution, winning seven awards for Best Club throughout its history. It’s a timeless and pioneering club and Lawson’s departure is a sad decision, though all good things must come to an end. He has released a series of DJ mixes paying homage to the club called Basic Vision, alongside a vinyl compilation album of sought after tracks from the club entitled Back to Basics Rare Classics.
