Heartbreaking Animal Rights Animated Short Film Kitbull Earns An Oscar Nomination

Pixar’s latest short film, Kitbull, has received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short, and it is not hard to see why. Usually, Pixar movies usually make us feel a whole range of emotions, and Kitbull will certainly have most viewers in tears.
The eight minute film tells the story of a stray kitten which befriends a pitbull which is horribly abused by its owner. Although Pixar is primarily known for CGI animation, Kitbull instead utilises a hand drawn 2D art style, which works to great effect. Although it’s hard to believe that this came from the same studio who bought us Cars.
Told entirely without dialogue, the eight minute short is bound to have viewers of all ages in tears, so do not go in expecting something fuzzy and light-headed. If you’re a parent thinking of showing this to your kids, you should keep in mind that Kitbull contains emotionally distressing scenes and even features some violent moments. However, if you’re hoping to teach them about the horrors of animal abuse, this may be a good place to start.
Kitbull was written and directed by Rosana Sullivan and is currently available to view on Pixar’s official YouTube channel and will and on the Disney+ streaming service, which launches in the UK in March. We won’t know if Kitbull wins the Oscar until the ceremony on February 9th, but given the strong critical reception it has received so far, it’s probably a safe bet that it will take home the prestigious award.
