Drum & Bass comes together over the tragic loss of Optiv.
The drum & bass community is coming together to mourn the loss of a true soldier in the scene. Over the weekend Edward Holmes, better known as Optiv, tragically passed away. He leaves a huge legacy and an insane discography of music that will be remembered forever.
Optiv first emerged into the scene with the seminal Cause4Concern collective. Their game-changing take on drum & bass has had an ever-lasting effect on the industry. The group/label was a pioneering force in the tech heavy edge of the music, which exploded in popularity. It wasn’t long before he began working as Optiv, regularly working alongside with his partners in crime CZA & BTK. Throughout his career he released on over 20 labels including Virus, Shogun, Renegade, RAM & Playaz with various albums and stacks of EPs and singles.
He was known for his techy, rolling beats with deep, dark vibes wrapped up in only the highest production values. When listening to his tunes it’s no wonder he’s earned so much respect across the industry and is held as an innovator and true drum & bass soldier. Despite his success, all those who knew him cannot speak highly enough of his character. He was at the top of his game but forever humble and true to himself. Tributes have been pouring in from across the drum & bass community; the labels, artists, events and fans who’ve all been touched by his spirit and music over the years.
Huge love to all Ed’s family and friends at this difficult time, we’ll remember him below with selection of his incredible records.
