Buju Banton's Back in the Studio Reggae | Friday 21st December 2018 | Deidre New Music Jamaica bujubanton icon djkhalid As all reggae fans know by now, Jamaica's most iconic reggae superstar since Bob Marley has been released from prison. Since his conviction in 2011, Buju Banton has spent the last seven years incarcerated in a US correctional facility but was released on 7th December in Atlanta where he boarded a plane heading to his homeland, receiving an unofficial hero’s welcome upon arrival in Jamaica from fans who had been eagerly awaiting his homecoming. Unlike dancehall’s biggest star, Vybz Kartel who continues to regularly record and release new music despite being given a life sentence in 2014 resulting in his incarceration in a Jamaican prison, the stricter regulations of the American prison system have meant that Buju fans has had to endure these past seven years without any new music from him. However, with a career that began at 17, nearly three decades ago, fans were not short of Buju songs to aid them whilst they anticipated his return. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait and the wait seems to be nearly over. Social media has been buzzing with photos with Buju Banton and hip-hop producer DJ Khaled in the recording studio and around Jamaica, indicating that new music is on the horizon. Whilst the seemingly unlikely collaboration may have caught some people off-guard, those who have been following DJ Khaled’s career know it is no secret that he is a massive fan of reggae and dancehall music. Buju’s first concert since his release is set for 16th March 2019 in Kingston, Jamaica and is set to draw crowds from around the world.
