Nearly 500K sign petition to keep Uber in London
Uber might be getting banned in London. TfL has said that Uber will not be issued a new license after its expiry date in a week's time.
Londoners have responded with over 420,000 signing a petition in support of Uber
What does this mean for Uber drivers and customers? Well in theory people will not be able to call or book a Uber through the app after the 30th of September, and as for drivers well they’ll be out of a job.
But how will I get to my destinations for under a tenner I hear you cry? Well, there will be a ruling allowed to appeal this decision and to clarify that Uber will be able to continue business whilst that ongoing process is made.
The appeal process will go on until mid-October, this will essentially mean Uber will completely disappear if the appeal is lost or have this decision reversed to continue operations in London.
TfL has said that Uber is: "not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license."
TfL has also said it made its decision to ban Uber from operating in London based on a "number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications."
This included Uber's attitude towards serious criminal offenses and their approach to "how medical certificates are obtained". Other issues included how Uber hid away from regulators
Uber will have 21 days to appeal the ruling until the 13th of October. TfL has said It can "continue to operate until any appeal processes have been exhausted."
Uber has come out saying that the decision would "show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".
With Uber confirming it would appeal against this decision. 3.5million Londoners who use the Uber app, along with more than 40,000 Uber drivers who rely on this company to make ends meet will certainly be shocked by decisions made.
If decisions to ban Uber go ahead this will certainly mean that thousands of workers will be out of employment and many will be deprived of convenient and affordable transport.
Are Transport for London decisions based on genuine concerns for the general public or is there an ulterior motive? Whatever it may be we know for sure that many will surely be affected by the TfL’s ban.
