The Eyes of My Mother Review: “A Truly Scary Horror Movie”

Other | Wednesday 22nd March 2017 | Francesco

I couldn’t believe that The Eyes of My Mother was Nicolas Pesce’s first feature film. It’s a remarkably well-done and a truly entertaining horror movie. It’s a powerful directorial debut and definitely a movie that you need to watch.

It is the story of Francisca and her mother who live on a farm. Francisca’s mother is a trained surgeon and she teaches her daughter how to remove organs and operate on animals. Something terrible happens: Charlie, a door to door salesman kills Francisca’s mother. This unexpected tragedy changes Francisca’s life forever. Years later, Charlie is captive and tortured in the same house and Francisca meets a Japanese student, Kimiko at a bar and another series of murders begin.

Pesce’s technique in depicting these powerful and graphic scenes is as cruel as possible. The Eyes of My Mother is not easy to watch but it has all the key elements that a horror movie must have. It is scary, it is complex and it is entertaining. Francisca’s character is a strong protagonist: Pesce makes you explore her troubled psychology and it does it masterfully.

The movie is gripping and the ending is satisfying. It creates the nightmare and traps you in this disturbing atmosphere and story. If you can’t stand graphic scenes, if you aren't keen on watching uncomfortable footage, don’t go for this movie.  If you are a true horror fan, don’t miss it.
