5 albums to watch out for in 2016

Wednesday 13th January 2016 | Teresa

In no particular order, here are five albums to watch out for:

1. Painting With

First on the list is the experimental sounds of Animal Collective with their 11th album, Painting With, expected to drop on February 19th. So far the group has dropped the effervescent "Floridada," a song teeming with their classic psychedelic undertones, overlayed with a bubbly beat, and an annoyingly catchy chorus smashed in between their mind-warping yet whimsically-sung lyrics. This song feels like a shroomy saunter in the park on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Check out the video below.

2. 99¢

Next up is 99¢ by the queen of cool, Santigold. Set to be released on January 22, this album's going to be packed with more than just hypnotic pop. Santigold's packing a big message. She's highlighting the "packaged" world we live in. "People’s lives, persona, everything, is deliberate, and mediated. It can be dark and haunting and tricky, and freak us out, but it can be also be silly and fun and we can learn to play with it." With this album, it sounds like Santigold's learned to play in this plastic society. Check out "Who Be Lovin' Me," one of the released tracks below.

3. Hymns

British indie rock group Bloc Party is back again with their fifth album Hymns, set to be released on January 29th. So far the band has dropped two songs from the album, 'The Love Within' and 'The Good News'. Both fit in nicely with the upbeat, unique sound of their previous albums, yet manifest completely different sounds. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the album brings.

4. Skin

Despite no stated release date, Flume has teased us with a preview from his upcoming LP Skin, and has also stated that the work is nearly finished. The LP preview features the classic, hypnotising and de-stressing sounds of Flume, meaning it'll be a nice edition to your electronic repertoire. Check out the preview below and download for free.

5. SWISH

Hate him or love him, this list would not be complete without the king of arrogance. Kanye West recently stated that the release date for SWISH is February 11th. After much trouble uploading a song to Soundcloud (and many memes to follow), Kanye has dropped "Real Friends" with Ty Dolla $ign and a snippet of "No Parties in LA" featuring Kendrick Lamar. With some dope collabs and a sound more akin to oldschool Kanye, I'm sure I speak for many of us when I say I'm excited to see what this album is all about.

So drop the booze, grab your trainers and earbuds, and get jogging once these albums drop.
