Make time for Mistress America

Other | Thursday 3rd September 2015 | Francesco

After the critically acclaimed Frances Ha and While We're Young, Noah Baumbach returns with Mistress America.

It's another thought-provoking film centering on the charm of Greta Gerwig, who plays the smart, self-conscious New Yorker Brooke. Tracy, played by Lola Kirke, is a lonely college freshman in New York. She doesn’t start college with excitement or live the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. When she decides to call her adventurous soon-to-be-stepsister Brooke, her life takes a completely new direction and she falls in love with her mad lifestyle.

It’s incredibly surprising how fast the movie morphs into something else. It starts as an ordinary and funny comedy about college and turns into as a gripping and crazy story of a sort of down-to-earth superhero called Mistress America. Brooke has no plans, nothing is certain for her, yet she still manages to do her best to get along. Baumbach doesn’t create superficial or stereotypical characters, he adds unexpected depth to them.

Mistress America is funny, absorbing, complex and has a perfect unresolved ending. Sometimes it is crazy, sometimes hilarious but it never loses its charm and wit.The cast deliver impeccable performances across the board. It is just the perfect window into two women struggling to navigate adulthood and make their way in the world.
