We chat about crazy parties and collaborations with Miguel Campell at EE 2015

House | Thursday 20th August 2015 | Osh

Miguel Campbell knows how to get a party started, as we were lucky enough to witness in Barcelona during OFF Sonar. The Hot Creations man and Outcross Records boss has played everywhere from Ibiza to Russia this summer, including two sets at Eastern Electrics, and he shows no signs of letting up. We caught up with him between his two slots to chat about crazy parties and collaborations.

Yes, here we are, EE 2015, I’m out with none other than Miguel Campbell, how you doing?
Yeah I’m fine thank you, how are you?

Nice, chilling man. It’s a wonderful sunny day.
Yeah, yeah for sure. Always a nice place to be on a sunny day, in the middle of a field, thousands of people, house music, it’s all good.

Exactly, this is what life’s about.
For sure.

So how’s summer been treating you so far?
Yeah it’s been cool, it’s been a little bit busy you know but again I’ve had the pleasure of visiting so many amazing places, so yeah it’s real nice.

The last time we saw you it was actually my birthday, in Barcelona, Miss Kittin.
Oh cool, yeah that was a good party, I really enjoyed it.

You had as much fun as we did yeah?
Yeah of course. I stayed around because of course Kerri Chandler played after myself and then Miss Kittin wrapped things up, yeah it was a perfect party.

Nice, have you got some work going on with Kerri Chandler?
No I’ve not been working with Kerri Chandler but at the moment we’re playing quite regularly together, you know. I think we play Luciano and Friends together at some point soon as well, so that’s really exciting.

He’s a fun guy right?
Yeah he’s always good to be around.

So what’s happening with your stuff musically?
I’ve got my album coming out in late September, early October time I think, I’m just waiting on the release date now. I’ve just released a new EP on my label with Beccs Lott, that’s called Free Falling, so yeah it’s a really exciting time for the music, being back in Leeds, having my studio at home, it’s perfect because I can be just as prolific as I used to be.

Are you getting your head down a little bit more here than you were in Ibiza?
Definitely so. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always been a treat to get back home in Ibiza on a Monday after I’ve been touring, relax by the pool, that’s nice you know but yeah right now it’s all about working in the studio and I’m literally in there every spare minute I have.

I see you’re still getting out quite a bit. What’s the craziest party you’ve been at? What’s ringing some bells in terms of a crazy party this year?
You know I do so many really cool parties but I recently played in St Tropez, which was a really cool party. Totally different kind of vibe, there was a food thing going on, nice to have something to eat, you’ve got the boats there, I say boats, they’re like ships, but it’s always nice to be there, for a guy from Yorkshire to look around and be like “wow, this is it”.

Helicopters and jet skis on the boats!
Yeah of course! And quite recently me and Jamie Jones and a couple of the other guys played Alfa Future People, which was in a town called Nizhny Novgorod in Russia, so yeah I’ve had the pleasure of going so many different places, and for me it’s all crazy because I’m just a regular guy and I like being at home.

A regular guy who makes good music though.
Yeah, yeah for sure. I’ve made music for a long time, my mum knows, she’s been asking me for years to turn my kick drum down, so it’s nice to eventually be able to say this is what we’ve made of it.

So what’s next for you? What are you most looking forward to in the future?
More collaborations. I’ve been working with Benjamin Diamond who sang ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ with Stardust. This was a really massive track in my collection and in many other people’s so to have an opportunity to work with him is really cool. He featured on my album actually, we have a couple tracks on there but we’re making an album together to push to a different label, I’m not sure where but it’s really exciting music.

Any stories of you going on any benders with any artists?
Benders, nah not for me mate! I’m a serious guy and when I get involved in the music thing I just keep it straight.

Ok, ok, so what do you do when you wind down? What are you doing to have a good time?
Wind down, I watch The Simpsons and go to sleep, and apart from that I hit the studio.

You played here already in the VIP yeah?
Yeah I played a hip-hop set in the Kubicle VIP and then in a few hours time I play on the Sankeys stage, with Steve Lawler and some of the other guys.

Nice one, so sum up Eastern Electrics in a couple of words.
Eastern Electrics in a couple of words, ok I’d say nice fields, good music, good people, togetherness.
