The future is here – self-lacing Nikes are on their way!

Other | Friday 27th February 2015 | Christina

In the classic Back To The Future II, Doc Brown takes Marty McFly and his girlfriend Jennifer from the eighties to the future in his flying DeLorean. The future they travel to is 2015. We’re IN the future of Back To The Future II. Take a moment to let that sink in.

Sadly, our brightest minds haven’t quite cracked the hoverboards or auto-drying clothes that Robert Zemeckis predicted we’d all be using, but the good people at Nike are making those sick self-lacing trainers a reality. Nike is putting the Nike MAG into production and they’ve even patented the technology. Nike innovation chief Tinker Hatfield hasn’t confirmed any release dates or prices for the kicks, but they are hoping to drop October 21, 2015 – the day that Marty and Doc arrived in the future. Engineers have also stated that the trainers could have practical benefits for those with mobility problems, so they’re not just a novelty item for film fans.

A 2011 limited release of the Nike MAG, which had LED lights but no power laces, raised $6 million for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, so there’s certainly an appetite for these shoes. And we’re firmly on the bandwagon.

We also sincerely hope that some genius is hard at work on a flux capacitor because time-travelling DeLoreans would be real handy.
