Should I Stay or Should I Go? Stag weekends in the UK and Abroad

Friday 8th February 2013 | Annalisa

With the amount of different cities and also countries offering cracking stag dos, now it is becoming more of a challenge just to decide if you are going to stay in the UK or travel abroad for yours. Just like Joe Strummer asked back in 1982, you may well be asking yourself ‘should I stay or should I go?’ We’ve got some hints, tips and ideas that may help you make an informed decision.

Sun, Sea and Sand

You might be looking to get some good weather for your stag do, and if that is the case then as much as it pains me to say you’ll probably want to be looking to go abroad. The delightful British summers can sometimes be too inconsistent and so for guaranteed sun another country is the only way. Speaking of ‘The Only Way’, Marbella has been one of our most popular overseas destinations, followed closely behind by Benidorm and Ibiza.

Eastern European Escapades

If the weather doesn’t bother you too much but you still want to go abroad then the Eastern European cities of Tallinn and Riga are a good choice for your standard stag activities but in a foreign land. Prague in the Czech Republic also offers a great weekend, and although it has been hinted that the city becomes overrun with stag and hen parties each weekend this has been somewhat sensationalised. Prague, and any other city for that matter, is more than big enough to cater for many stag groups as well as their own residents and tourists.

Las Vegas, the City of Sin

Moving further afield, there is always the stag do mecca that is Las Vegas. With its popularity now rising faster than ever, thanks in part to The Hangover, Las Vegas is the ultimate destination for a stag weekend. It’s got it all: casinos, clubs, day clubs, malls, cinemas, you name it, and ‘Sin City’ itself has probably got it. One piece of advice I’d give you is that if you do go to Vegas for your stag do:you don’t have a shotgun wedding with a stripper on a whim (even if it turns out to be Heather Graham).

Staying Closer to Home

While I’ve been focusing on foreign locations this doesn’t mean that our own back yard doesn’t offer a great stag weekend. Bournemouth is the ultimate British stag do town, and is closely followed by Brighton, Nottingham, London and Manchester. All of these cities are just the tip of the UK stag weekend iceberg, and you’ll actually find a much wider range of activities on offer in UK destinations than most overseas cities and town.

Deciding Factors

There may be any number of deciding factors which can help (or force you, whichever way you look at it) to make your decision for you. For instance, the time of year may dictate whether you want or even need to go abroad. The size of your group and also your budget; whether as an individual or group as a whole, you may need to rule out certain destinations.
The best thing you can do is sit down with a few of the lads, find out what you can all afford and then work from there.
