DJ Scratcha DVA Interview

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 15th December 2011 | Annalisa

Hey hows things..have you had a busy summer?
Hey, yeh summers been great, Ive been playing at a couple festivals in Europe and I have got a lot of releases planned before this year is out
You have been playing your morning show on Rinse FM now for 5 years..how are the early mornings?!
It’s not easy getting up at 5:45am, the snooze button becomes a next crud, but as soon as I get to the lane I get myself a double macchiato 3sugars, turn the mic on and woyyy!!...hulk ting
How did the show happen?
It kinda just happened, because I used to do Monday and Friday 5-7pm. I started using the 4hrs a week to talk a lot, air some views an play new music. Then rinse asked me to do a full time brekkie show so I gave it a go and it worked out. I’m just happy people wake up to hear serious bassline and mc’in at such an early time There are not many stations where you can find something like that. I wish when I was younger I could hear all my favorite underground tracks live in the morning.
How did you first get into music?
I wanted to make music. That’s how it started. So I looked up some studios and I got couple hook ups to go to some and tried orchestrating these really rubbish tracks which at the time I thought  were SICK!Making music will always be my main passion. The radio just came from me being a gassbag and wanting to share the music I found.
What are your thoughts on the UK funky scene at the moment?
I get asked this question all the time......
And a lot of people may say its dead
But it’s alive from where I’m standing.
I’m djin more than I ever have in my whole life playing house an funky,
I’m selling records and mp3s.
I won’t lie to you I can see a few tombstones over there but I’m cool over here
The music is progressing and changing all the time just the way I like it.
The people who say its dead are still going to raves waiting to hear migraine skank.
What are your top funky tracks at the moment?
1 COOLY G - IS IT GONE? (DUB)
2 GUGU - AC RIDDIM (DVA MUSIC)
3 MW MEGA - IN THE JUNGLE (DUB)
4 REDLIGHT - SOURCE 16 (DUB)
5 DVA FT FATIMA - JUST VYBE (HYPERDUB)
What new music do you think we should watch out for at the moment?
Watch out for what Hyperdub Records are doing..... Kode9's a very serious guy. Also I’ve heard working progress on L Vis 1990’ss album and Cooly G’s and they are the most amazing pieces of audio I’ve heard in a long time. I’m excited for them.
You have produced alongside many artists such as Wiley, Cooly G, Roska and D-Malice is there anyone that you would like to work with?
Other than the singers of Foreign Exchange, nothing excites me more than to think one day I will find an unknown and unheard talent I can put my energy and production skills into. Not even working with Beyonce, Alicia Keys or no one would give me more happiness than to blow an unheard artist on my sound, not even Lady Gaga.
Your new tune "Just Vybe (Soule:Power Mix)" with UK artist Fatima is released on October 4th via Hyperdub, how was working with Fatima?
There’s no way you can go into the studio with Fatima and not leave with something amazing. She’s just got that vybe about her. As a producer it’s good to work with good energy and she has bare of that. She is probably my favorite to work with, I shouldn’t say that but hey ho.
What inspires your music?
Gyal, food and hi emotions.
If you could be invisible for the day what would you do?!
Oh gosh lol erm...I would probably go to Buckingham palace or wherever the queen lives and see if she really does wipe her own ass or not.
I hear your a big fan of twitter! Do you feel that new technology has had a impact on the music industry?
Twitter is good for music because you can connect with people who you may not be able to on other social networking sites. Twitter doesn’t have all your business up on there like pictures of fam and other private info. I think artists/celebs whoever are more likely to chat to you because it’s not so open and loose like say FaceBook or something. So for networking twitter has made things a lot easier.
Whats in store for the the future?
I have something inside of me an I need to get it out that something will be put on my album, but I’m looking to go Egypt with my laptop and just vybe out for it. So watch this space.
