Guestlist Recommends: Joss Ryan

After Mary Anne Hobbs and Scratcha hyped him to us, we knew this guy was one to keep our ears wide open for.
Like many in the current UK bass scene, Joss Ryan’s immersion into the expanding realm of dubstep (should we trust ourselves to limit it to just that one label?) was initially influenced by grime. Still a youngster at only 19, Joss’s developing sound has kept its ears open to some of the most outstanding artists around at the moment such as Flying Lotus and Submotion Orchestra - you can sense Joker’s synth-based purple sound there too, another producer that he absorbed during his early stages of production. It was earlier on this year that Joss Ryan’s music was first aired to Rinse FM listeners on Scratcha’s Grimey Breakfast Show and even now the radio host, DJ and producer still continues to push Joss’s tunes on his own label, DVA. Our interview with Mary Anne Hobbs on the previous page is proof of her excitement about this guy’s contribution to electronic music, too.
Joss Ryan’s four-track Melancholy Dreams EP, featuring tracks ‘Drop It’ and ‘Melancholy Dreams’ which is due out at the end of 2011 on DVA. We’re loving what we’ve heard and are pretty keen see what big things he gets up to next! Watch this space...
